Big Picture

The issues of physical and human geography impact my topic because New Zealand would lose some of its history and use the Maori land to urbanize the country. The Maori would lose some of their culture and diversity if their land is taken from them to be urbanized.
My topic most relates to changing cultural processes because the way New Zealand has started to treat the Maori is resulting in a change of cultural ways. The Maori are being discriminated against and losing culture, while New Zealand is gaining urbanization and adopting more diverse ways like Christianity.
The topic shows both the positive effects for the government and the negative effects for the Maori people. It's showing the loss of culture, but the gain of urbanization. Other people can learn from this and mimic the strategies both governments are using to their own benefit.

  1. This reminds me of how colonialism affected the natives in Africa. They were both treated badly even though they both occupied the land first and are they both are given very little rights. A lot of natives in Africa were sent off as slaves and were constantly working for little to no pay. A lot were also forced into working on plantations or in mines living off of virtually nothing trying to support themselves. I believe the native inhabitants of any country should be given the same or even more rights as anyone else in that same country, whether it’s in New Zealand, Africa, or anywhere else in the world.

  2. This reminds me of when the Aryan invaders brought the caste system to India. Many people living in India didn't agree with the system and found violent ways to rebel against it. The caste system was designed to only benefit certain people that were in charge and the people that were lower on on the system, weren't treated well. People like the Maori in New Zealand were being discriminated against just like other people lower than the people of higher power in the caste system in India.
